OMODA 5 Petrol vs Hybrid vs EV: Which One Fits Your Life?

Three powertrains, one compact SUV. The easiest choice depends on where you drive, whether you can charge and how simple you want ownership to feel.

The short answerChoose petrol for the lowest starting price and familiar refuelling, SHS-H for better fuel economy without plugging in, or EV if you can charge regularly and want quiet, zero-tailpipe-emission driving.

The OMODA 5 is unusual because the same core SUV idea is offered with petrol, self-charging hybrid and fully electric power. That makes it easier to compare drivetrains without changing the size and style of car.

Petrol

Best for a lower purchase price, familiar long-distance travel and drivers who do not want to think about charging.

SHS-H hybrid

Best for mixed driving and stronger fuel economy, with no cable or home charger required.

EV

Best for drivers with reliable charging who value smooth performance and lower day-to-day energy costs.

When petrol makes sense

The petrol version is the straightforward entry point. It costs less than the other two, has the largest boot by a small margin and suits drivers who frequently cover long distances with unpredictable stops. Its 1.6-litre turbo engine and automatic gearbox keep the experience familiar.

Why the SHS-H is the middle ground

The self-charging SHS-H does not need to be plugged in. It uses a petrol engine, battery and electric motor together, recovering energy while driving. The headline gain is efficiency—52.2mpg combined—along with stronger performance than the petrol car.

Who should choose the EV?

The EV is the quietest and smoothest version. Its 61kWh battery delivers an official 267-mile WLTP range, while a suitable rapid charger can take the battery from 30 to 80% in about 28 minutes. Real range and charge time vary with weather, speed, load and charger conditions.

If you can charge at home, the EV can be the most convenient day to day. If you rely entirely on public charging, map your regular routes and local prices before deciding.

The simple verdict

There is no universally “best” OMODA 5. Petrol asks for the least change, SHS-H provides the broadest no-plug efficiency upgrade, and EV rewards drivers whose parking and charging routine already suit electric motoring.
