Buying a used MG4: what to check
Start with the right battery and specification, then get to know the individual car. Here is a practical way to shortlist a used MG4 EV.
Your quick guide
- Identify the version: SE, Trophy and Extended Range badges do not all mean the same battery or equipment.
- Check the individual car: review its history, charging equipment, condition and remaining cover.
- Match it to your week: consider your longest regular journey and where you will charge, as well as the advertised price.
Which used MG4 should you shortlist?
A used MG4 can be an appealing way into electric driving: a five-door hatchback with different battery choices and a useful spread of equipment. The best starting point is the journey you make regularly, rather than the largest range figure in the advert.
Write down your daily mileage, any regular longer trips and whether you can charge at home or work. Then compare cars with the same battery, trim and model year. A registration plate alone does not identify the full specification.
The examples below refer to the earlier UK MG4 range. The updated MG4 and MG4 EV Urban use different specifications, so their figures should not be applied to an older car.
Earlier MG4 battery and range choices
SE Standard Range
- Battery
- 51 kWh
- Original WLTP range
- Up to 218 miles
A useful starting point for shorter regular journeys with convenient charging.
SE Long Range
- Battery
- 64 kWh
- Original WLTP range
- Up to 281 miles
Worth comparing when you want more flexibility between charges.
Trophy Long Range
- Battery
- 64 kWh
- Original WLTP range
- Up to 270 miles
Compare the additional equipment with the SE, alongside condition and price.
Trophy Extended Range
- Battery
- 77 kWh
- Original WLTP range
- Up to 323 miles
An option to consider for longer regular journeys.
Original UK launch figures: MG4 SE and Trophy and Extended Range. These are official figures when new, not a measurement of a used car’s current range. Weather, speed, battery condition and use affect the distance available. XPOWER is a separate performance version.
Start with the paperwork
Ask to see the service record and invoices, and match the registration and vehicle identification number to the documents. Establish when the next service is due, rather than assuming a recently purchased car will not need one soon.
MG publishes an annual or 15,000-mile service schedule, whichever comes first, for the MG4 EV. Check the schedule applicable to the exact car and whether its record is complete. MG’s servicing guidance explains its digital records.
The original manufacturer warranty can be a useful benefit on a used MG4. MG’s headline cover is seven years or 80,000 miles, whichever comes first, from first registration. The unused balance can transfer, subject to the applicable terms; buying used does not start a fresh seven years.
Ask for confirmation of the remaining cover on the particular vehicle, including any separate component limits. Our MG warranty guide explains the wider picture.
Check charging before you collect
- Confirm the supplied cables. Ask which charging lead comes with the car and check its condition. Do not assume every previous owner has kept the same accessories.
- Try the charging connection. Ask for a demonstration of connecting, starting and ending a charge, including releasing the cable.
- Understand the range display. Its estimate changes with recent driving and conditions. It is not a battery-health certificate.
- Ask what battery information is available. If a diagnostic or battery report is supplied, check its date and what was measured.
- Plan your first week. Locate a convenient charger and check its connector, tariff and payment method before collection.
If you will rely on public charging, price that into your budget using the chargers you actually expect to use. Home and rapid-charging costs can differ substantially.
Make your viewing useful
Try the car on roads similar to your normal route. Check your seating position, visibility, parking manoeuvres and the response of the controls. Connect your phone and test the functions you expect to use every day.
Look at the tyres, wheels, bodywork and cabin, and ask about any warning messages or outstanding manufacturer campaigns. Confirm what preparation, servicing or software work will be completed before handover.
Bring the bag, pushchair or equipment that normally travels with you. A few minutes checking the opening and load space can make your shortlist much clearer.
Before reserving, get the agreed specification, included equipment and any promised work in writing. Those details make it easier to compare two otherwise similar cars.
Your questions answered
Which battery sizes appear in earlier used MG4s?
Common earlier UK versions use 51 kWh, 64 kWh or 77 kWh batteries. Check the individual listing and model-year specification rather than relying only on the registration year.
Does a used MG4 still have a warranty?
It may retain part of its original manufacturer cover. Ask for confirmation against the car’s first-registration date, mileage, history and applicable warranty terms.
Does an electric MG4 need servicing?
Yes. Electric cars still need scheduled maintenance. Check the vehicle’s service record and the MG schedule for that version.
Is the displayed range a battery-health test?
No. The dashboard range is an estimate affected by recent use and conditions. Ask what separate battery information is available for the car.
