MG4 Urban: home or public charging?
A practical look at charging access, cost and the routine that fits your mileage.
At a glance
- Home example: about £7.31 per 100 miles at the October–December Ofgem average, using the stated assumptions.
- Public examples: £15.00 on standard PAYG or £21.94 on rapid/ultra-rapid PAYG at September’s Zapmap averages.
- Plan around your life: charging access and the total tariff matter as much as battery size.
Choose the charging routine before the tariff
For an MG4 EV Urban, charging at home can be convenient and cost-effective—but you do not need a driveway to own an electric car. What matters is whether you have reliable places to charge at a price that works for your mileage.
The Urban has two battery sizes: 42.8kWh and 53.9kWh. MG lists 201 miles WLTP for Comfort Standard Range and 258 miles for Comfort Long Range. Premium Long Range has its own 251-mile figure. Choose the exact version before comparing range or planning stops.
What could 100 miles of charging cost?
At home
- Illustrative off-peak rate
- 7p/kWh → £1.94 / 100 miles
- Ofgem national average
- 26.32p/kWh → £7.31 / 100 miles
- Price-cap period
- 1 October–31 December 2026
On the public network
- Standard PAYG average
- 54p/kWh → £15.00 / 100 miles
- Rapid / ultra-rapid average
- 79p/kWh → £21.94 / 100 miles
- Zapmap reporting month
- September 2026
Calculation: this illustration assumes 4 miles per kWh delivered to the battery and 90% charging efficiency. That means buying about 27.78kWh for 100 miles. It is a scenario, not an MG road-test result or a promise of your costs.
The 7p rate is a hypothetical off-peak example, not a current tariff recommendation. Ofgem’s figure is the national average electricity unit rate for a standard direct-debit household on the cap; regional rates differ. Zapmap’s figures are usage-weighted PAYG averages, not the price at every charger. Standing charges, parking, connection fees, subscriptions and installation are excluded.
Home charging: think about the whole bill
If you have suitable parking and a professionally installed charger, an overnight top-up can replace a separate refuelling stop. You can often schedule charging to fit your routine or an off-peak window.
Do not choose a tariff from its cheapest overnight number alone. Check the daytime rate, standing charge, eligible equipment and how long the cheaper window lasts. The rest of your household’s electricity use matters too.
Installation cost is separate from the electricity used. Invicta’s Pod Point offer is one place to start when discussing a home-charging quotation and its current conditions.
Public charging: a workable plan, not a last resort
If you cannot charge at home, look for dependable connections near work, shops or places you already visit. A slower charger can be useful when the car will be parked for several hours; rapid charging is more useful when you need a shorter stop.
Check the price in the operator’s app or on the charger before starting. Membership and subscription prices can differ from PAYG, but a subscription only helps if your use justifies the fee.
On a longer journey, plan a primary stop and a sensible alternative. Battery temperature, state of charge and charger conditions affect speed, so a quoted peak rate is not a constant delivery rate.
Which routine suits your MG4 Urban?
With regular home access, your starting point may be small, frequent overnight top-ups. Without it, your local public network and the time you already spend parked become more important. Either way, use the actual tariff and your own mileage rather than assuming all EV charging costs the same.
The Urban’s wireless phone charger is a separate convenience feature; it does not charge the car’s traction battery. Ask our MG team to demonstrate the vehicle’s charging connection and help you understand the equipment supplied with the exact version.
If you are comparing Standard Range with Long Range, discuss your busiest normal day and occasional longer trips—not only the longest journey you have ever made.
