MG ZS Hybrid+ vs BYD SEALION 5

No-plug simplicity or a rechargeable battery? Start with how you will use your SUV.

At a glance

  • MG ZS Hybrid+: a full hybrid; refuel with petrol and let the car manage its battery.
  • BYD SEALION 5 DM-i: a plug-in hybrid; regular charging is central to making the most of its electric range.
  • MG value: current SE list price £23,995 OTR versus BYD’s published Comfort starting price of £29,995 OTR.

Start with one question: will you plug in?

A hybrid badge does not tell you how you will use the car. The MG ZS Hybrid+ is a full hybrid that does not plug in. The BYD SEALION 5 DM-i is a plug-in hybrid. Both have a petrol engine and electric propulsion, but the charging routine is different.

If you want electrified driving without arranging charging, the MG is the simpler ownership proposition. If you can plug in regularly and want to cover more of a daily journey on stored electricity, the BYD is worth understanding on that basis.

The MG price is from its current UK configurator. BYD’s UK published Comfort list price excludes optional paint; confirm the current quotation. These are purchase-price comparisons, not monthly finance examples. The larger-battery Design’s 53-mile figure does not belong to Comfort.

The MG advantage: no charging diary

ZS Hybrid+ manages its battery automatically, recovering energy under braking and using the petrol engine as part of the hybrid system. There is no charge lead to connect and no wallbox installation to organise.

That suits drivers whose parking or work arrangements make plugging in inconvenient. It is also a straightforward way to move from a conventional petrol car into a hybrid without changing how you refuel. The car still uses petrol; “self-charging” does not mean free energy.

MG’s current UK model information lists wireless smartphone connectivity and its MG Pilot driver-assistance package. Check the exact SE car when ordering, particularly if you are comparing it with older stock or an earlier review.

What changes with the BYD?

The SEALION 5 Comfort’s rechargeable battery is designed to support up to 38 miles of electric running under WLTP testing. For a driver with regular charging access, that can cover a useful portion of the day before petrol assistance is needed.

The Design version has a larger battery and a different price, so it should be quoted separately. A plug-in hybrid can still operate when its indicated electric range is depleted, but leaving it unplugged means not making full use of the reason for choosing that larger rechargeable battery.

The BYD is also a larger vehicle: its UK specification lists 4,738mm in length. If you are choosing for town parking, try both the seating and the parking footprint rather than treating every family SUV as the same size.

Keep the whole ownership cost in view

The MG’s current starting list price is £6,000 lower than BYD’s published Comfort starting price. That is a meaningful difference to include in your budget, alongside insurance, servicing and fuel or electricity.

Do not compare the MG’s normal hybrid fuel-consumption figure with a plug-in hybrid’s weighted figure and assume that tells you the cost of your journeys. PHEV laboratory results include electric running; the outcome depends heavily on charging.

For the ZS, ask our team to quote the exact car and explain its equipment. If the appeal is a five-seat automatic SUV with hybrid assistance and no need to plug in, ZS Hybrid+ is a clear fit for that brief.

Your questions answered

Do I need to plug in an MG ZS Hybrid+?
No. Its full-hybrid system manages its battery without an external charging connection.
Is the BYD SEALION 5 fully electric?
No. The DM-i is a plug-in hybrid with a petrol engine and a battery that you can charge externally.
How far can SEALION 5 Comfort drive electrically?
BYD’s UK figure is 38 miles WLTP for Comfort. The 53-mile figure refers to the larger-battery Design version, not Comfort. Actual range varies.
Can a plug-in hybrid drive without a charged battery?
Yes, it retains petrol operation. But charging regularly is how you make use of its extended electric-driving capability.
Can I compare the headline mpg figures directly?
Not as a prediction of your running costs. Plug-in hybrid weighted figures include electric driving and depend on a charging pattern unlike a full hybrid’s.
Where can I explore the MG ZS Hybrid+?
Use Invicta’s MG model and offers pages, then contact the MG team to discuss the exact version and arrange a visit.
