At a glance

  • Yes: electric MGs still require scheduled maintenance.
  • Check the exact model: time and mileage limits apply, even if you drive infrequently.
  • Compare the work: request a model-specific quote and check what a service plan includes.

Electric MG servicing

Yes—an electric MG still needs maintenance

An electric MG does not have a petrol engine, but it still has components and systems that need regular attention. Tyres, brakes, cabin ventilation and the vehicle’s cooling systems remain part of ownership. Going electric changes the maintenance requirements; it does not remove them.

MG publishes separate schedules by model and year. For MG4 EV from 2026 and MGS5 EV from 2025, its standard schedule is 12 months or 15,000 miles, whichever comes first. Check your exact vehicle with the team, especially if you own an earlier MG or a different electric model. See MG’s UK service schedules.

What replaces the petrol-engine service tasks?

Tasks that change

A fully electric car does not need petrol-engine oil changes or spark-plug replacement. This distinction does not apply to an MG hybrid or plug-in hybrid, which still has a combustion engine.

Maintenance that remains

MG’s listed EV schedules include items such as pollen filters, brake fluid and coolant at their specified intervals. Some versions also list transmission oil. The full job list depends on the model and service due.

Ask for the work list for your registration number and mileage. That helps you compare service quotations for the same work, rather than comparing an EV inspection with a different car’s major service.

Low mileage does not remove the time limit

If you drive fewer miles, the calendar can bring the next service due before the mileage limit. Keep the service anniversary in your diary and check the last recorded service when buying a used MG.

Give the booking team your registration, current mileage and any service-history information you have. Mention a warning message or change in how the car behaves when you book; the team can advise whether it needs attention before the routine appointment.

You can start with Invicta’s MG servicing page and ask the service team to confirm what is due.

A service plan is a budgeting choice

A plan can spread the cost of scheduled servicing, but the useful comparison is what it covers. Ask for the term, mileage allowance, payment total and the services included for your exact MG.

MG says an MOT can be added when selecting a service plan. It should not be assumed to be automatically included. Ask whether wear items, repairs or additional work are covered, and request the terms before choosing.

A service and an MOT serve different purposes. Booking one does not automatically mean the other has been completed. Read MG’s service-plan information.

Keep a clear record of the work

MG dealers register completed servicing on the Digital Service Record system. Ask the team to confirm the entry after your appointment and keep the invoice detailing the work carried out.

A consistent record makes the history easier to check when you sell or change cars. Following the manufacturer’s maintenance requirements also matters when considering warranty cover. For the wider cover details, see our existing MG warranty guide.

For an accurate cost comparison, ask Invicta for a quote covering the next service or a defined period of ownership. There is no reliable single price for every electric MG, and a lower number of engine-related tasks does not establish the total cost of tyres, repairs and maintenance.

Electric MG servicing: questions answered

Do electric MGs need servicing?
Yes. MG requires scheduled servicing for its electric vehicles. Check the model, year and mileage with the service team.
How often should I service an MG4 or MGS5 EV?
The current manufacturer schedules for the versions identified above use whichever comes first: the time limit or mileage limit. Other years and models may differ.
Does an EV have no fluids to maintain?
No. An EV can still have scheduled fluid requirements. Use its own maintenance schedule rather than a generic petrol-car checklist.
Is an electric MG service always cheaper?
Not necessarily. Compare quotations for the exact service work and include the other ownership costs relevant to your car.
Does a service plan include an MOT?
MG says an MOT can be added when selecting a plan. Check that it is explicitly included in your chosen quotation.
How do I arrange servicing with Invicta?
Start at Invicta MG servicing. Supply your registration and mileage so the team can identify the correct schedule and quote.
